When videos buffer and downloads crawl, the first question is always: is it my internet or the website? A proper speed test answers that in under a minute. This guide shows you how to run one correctly and how to read the results.
Step 1 — Close other downloads and streams
Before you test, pause every other device that is using your connection — downloads, video streams, cloud backups, game updates. A speed test measures the bandwidth available at that moment, so if your phone is updating apps in the background, the test will show a lower number than your plan actually delivers.
Step 2 — Use a reliable speed test
Three free, widely trusted options are:
- Fast.com — the simplest. Open the page and it starts automatically. Good for a quick check.
- Speedtest.net — shows more detail and lets you pick the server you test against.
- The Google Fiber speed test — search "internet speed test" on Google and a tool appears at the top of the results.
For most home users, Fast.com is enough. If you are diagnosing a specific problem, use Speedtest.net and note which server you connect to.
Step 3 — Understand the three numbers
Every speed test reports three main figures:
- Download speed — how fast data arrives at your device. This is the number most people care about because it affects streaming, browsing and downloads. Measured in Mbps (megabits per second).
- Upload speed — how fast data leaves your device. Matters for video calls, sending large files and live streaming. Usually much lower than download on home plans.
- Ping (latency) — the round-trip delay in milliseconds. Lower is better. Ping matters most for gaming and video calls, where lag is immediately noticeable.
What speeds do you actually need?
Here is a rough guide for common household use:
- 5–10 Mbps — basic browsing and email on one or two devices.
- 25 Mbps — streaming HD video on one device plus light browsing on others.
- 50–100 Mbps — a family streaming on multiple devices at once.
- 200 Mbps and above — 4K streaming, large downloads and many simultaneous users.
For video calls on Zoom or Google Meet, a stable 3 Mbps upload and 3 Mbps download is usually enough, but latency matters more than raw speed.
Step 4 — Compare with your plan
Check the result against the speed your internet provider promises. Most providers advertise speeds "up to" a certain number, and real-world speeds are typically 70–90% of that figure due to Wi-Fi loss, distance from the router and network congestion. If you consistently get less than 60% of your plan speed, restart your router, move closer to it, or use a wired Ethernet connection to isolate whether the issue is Wi-Fi or your provider.
Run the test a few times across different hours. If speeds drop sharply in the evening, the cause is usually network congestion on your provider's side — and a single test at midnight will confirm it.
