What makes a password strong?

  • Length: every extra character makes a password exponentially harder to crack. Aim for at least 16 characters for important accounts.
  • Variety: using uppercase, lowercase, numbers and symbols multiplies the number of possible combinations.
  • Unpredictability: random passwords cannot be guessed like "password123" or your pet's name.
  • Uniqueness: never reuse a password across multiple accounts. If one leaks, the others stay safe.

How long should my password be?

For everyday accounts, 12–16 characters is sufficient. For email, banking and password manager master passwords, use 20+ characters. A 16-character password with all four character types has over 90 bits of entropy — strong enough to resist any practical brute-force attack for the foreseeable future.
